The Illustrious Bar Association of Madrid – “the house of rights and freedoms”, as José Ignacio Monedero, secretary of the board, called it – hosted the II Legal Conference on Bullfighting, inaugurated by José Luis Martínez Almeidamayor of Madrid. In them, the legal and regulatory aspects surrounding bullfighting have been debated, dealing with current issues such as image rights in the digital age, the situation in Colombia or the attitude of the minister of Culture. “It is as if the Ministry of Industry was against the industry,” said the mayor.
He also spoke at the opening José Antonio Moreno, member of the General Council of the Judiciary, who highlighted the need for these Conferences to send a message of freedom against “the single thought and the politically correct thing” that they try to impose on society, Almeida recalling that the “popular fervor for bullfighting is recovering. Enrique Arnaldo, Constitutional magistrate, highlighted the importance of “defending what is ours” against totalitarianism.
In the round table that addressed the rights and duties of bullfighting fans, Joaquin Moeckel He explained that, for the benefit of businessmen and fans, when a substitution has been announced in advance, the tickets must be returned in time, since doing so too early can “deprive other interested parties from purchasing those tickets.” He also expressed that they should “allow them to witness the recognition of the cattle,” advocating for greater transparency in the pens, as well as that “the second ear is the power of the public.”
Antonio Garcia, magistrate of the First Chamber of the Supreme Court, spoke about the freedom of minors to go to a bullring – a theme present in Mallorca -. “My children have gone to bullfights since they were little, and I can assure you that they are not stupid,” he said jokingly, defending the right that minors should also have to want to be bullfighters.
During the first round table, which was based on the protection of bullfighting in the Jurisprudence of the 21st centuryJosé Luque Teruel, president of the Maestranza and judge, expressed the need to create a “great law” on bullfighting, so as not to always need to resort to the rulings of the Supreme and Constitutional Courts which, as they recalled, have always protected bullfighting.
