The Russian tennis player had to undergo emergency surgery in New York during the US Open
A little over a month ago, Andrey Rublev was eliminated in the fourth round of the US Open after losing in a marathon five-set match against the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. When he was leaving the facilities of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, he felt severe pain in his testicle.
The Russian tennis player (26 years old) decided to immediately go to the Emergency Department of a hospital. And that was what saved him. He revealed it himself this weekend during his participation in the Stockholm Open.
And he did it in a humorous tone: «I don’t know how to tell it intelligently, but I can tell it in a fun way: I almost lost my ballto».
«I was very lucky. The blood was not reaching my testicle and at the hospital they told me that when that happens you only have five or six hours to solve it. If not, it must be amputated», explained the Russian tennis player who attends tournaments under a neutral flag.
“I was lucky,” he insisted. I don’t know why I said: ‘I feel something strange, let’s go to the hospital‘. They checked me immediately and took me to get a checkup. emergency operation when only three or four hours had passed since I noticed the first sensation.
The last champion of the Madrid Masters 1,000 ended his story with the same touch of humor: “They did it very well and in the end everything turned out great, but I remember that the last thing I did before they anesthetized me was sign a paper authorizing them to so they could amputate my ball. “That was the last thing I saw before the operation.”
