Another season, the comic actor Josema Yuste He takes the stage to star in May God Catch Us Confessed, a work that he also directs, along with The Dinner of Idiots, another of the performances on the bill at the same theater. “The truth is that the Muñoz Seca has become my second home because the theater belongs to Enrique Cornejo and he has rented it to my partner, Jesús Sánchez-Ramade.” For Yuste, It is a pleasure to see the theater’s 300 seats full almost every day. Nor is directing two plays more complicated than acting: “It’s something that I’ve liked for many years, when I entered the School of Dramatic Arts and was about to opt for the directing branch. But the teachers convinced me that I had to be an actor,” he explains in conversation with ABC.
For the actor, the theater is in a good moment: «I don’t know if it is the best, but in the last 15 years, I would say it is one of the best moments. As a result of the pandemic, locked up at home, we consume a lot of television, many series, many movies and we are a little saturated. There is a desire to see something live and that still lasts. He likes to take risks on stage, not only at an acting level, but also at a business level, but he has been lucky and has never gone bankrupt: «In the plays I have been in as an actor, I have not lost money in any of them; Yes, I have lost with others, but the good thing I have is that we are three partners. Just as you distribute profits, you distribute losses; That is to say, you don’t go bankrupt if you have a head and, if things go well, you can live honestly,” he points out.
Although he has combined theater with some television projects, Josema decided to take refuge in theater when the duo Martes y Trece dissolved. «It was my cradle; I started in a good amateur theater group at school. I was seven years old and, when I got off the stage, I told my mother that I was clear that I wanted to be an actor, although they didn’t pay attention to me. His first work was in the musical Godspell, which premiered at the Marquina Theater in 1974; Since then, he has never lacked work. “The beginnings are hard and I lived with what was tight and tight, but I have never been in need,” he confesses.
Years ago, together with Millán Salcedo, He parodied characters from all walks of life and made humor about the situation in the country.. Something that now seems a difficult task or, at least, not without controversy: «Before they judged you less; There were no social networks, there was not the immediacy that there is now. Everything was politically incorrect and nothing happened. He recognizes that “we have lost freedom, but we have improved in equality.”
At 70 years old, he is great and fit, not only because of the daily dose of good laughter, but also because he plays sports and takes care of his diet. «Doctors say that laughing benefits the cardiovascular system, so if you laugh for a while every day, it is as if you were taking a heart pill… Going to the gym bores me. “I have played a lot of tennis and now I play golf as much as I can.”
When it comes to food, he follows the philosophy that a Natural Sciences professor gave him many years ago: «From now until you die, keep a little appetite. For this reason, I make a complete breakfast with oatmeal, avocado, tomato, a little carbohydrate and fruit. Then I eat a single plate in which I put some vegetables and a steak, and then I give a lot of kefir, which suits me very well.and the dinner very soft.

Josema avoids social networks because he believes that they waste a lot of energy and create a lot of anguish: «I want to be a free being and have my own criteria. Wrong or not, but from my personal criteria, and I don’t want to know what people think of me. My social network is theater; The daily function is my best thermometer. “I owe myself to the people who pay an entrance fee and to no one else,” he acknowledges.
He knows what it is to have an idol; His was Luis Sánchez Polack “Tip”, whom he was lucky enough to meet. Luis del Olmo offered to replace José Luis Coll, who was leaving the popular radio section The Debate on the State of the Nation on Onda Cero. «I only went one day because they called me for a television series. Polack invited me to a few drinks before the program, I think so that he would enter relaxed. I will be eternally grateful; “It was something unspeakable for me,” recalls the comic actor.
Despite fame, he has always been clear that he has not wanted to be a character of the heart: «I have never sold my life nor have I wanted to mix my family with my work. At first they didn’t understand it, but in the end they did. The most important thing is to be clear from the beginning. You can’t choose what you sell and I have always been very clear that that money would burn me. I live from my work and I think that, by being clear and honest, I have earned the respect of the press. “I have also had a very normal life, without scandals.”

He is already over the ordinary retirement age, although he could do so now if he wanted to, but he assures that he does not know what he would do at home. «I have only managed to do one show from Wednesday to Sunday and my next challenge is to do one from Thursday to Sunday. Maybe in five years I’ll quit because I don’t see myself at 92 years old like Arturo Fernández on stage».
And Yuste has always been a bit of an ant, thanks to the philosophy that his father taught him since he was little: «I worked at the Bank of Spain and he told me: ‘It’s very simple, even if you earn five, save half or one, because “You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow.”.
