The Undersecretary of the Interior of Chile, Manuel Monsalve, one of the most responsible for security in the country, resigned from his position this Thursday, just three hours after a complaint came to light against him for alleged sexual abuse that already The Prosecutor’s Office is investigating.

In a brief appearance at the La Moneda Palace, Monsalve assured that he does not know what the content of the complaint is but that given the complexity of the situation, he prefers to step aside to defend himself and prove his innocence.

“I have to guarantee the normal functioning of the Government, and with my position as undersecretary I have a direct and daily relationship with the Public Ministry and Carabineros of Chile,” said the former undersecretary in a brief press point from the La Moneda palace in Santiago. , without questions from the press.

Monsalve insisted on his innocence and stressed that he has “the absolute conviction” that he did not commit any crime. “In the framework of the investigation I will prove my innocence,” he added.

Hours before, the head of the North Central Prosecutor’s Office, Xavier Armendáriz, confirmed in statements to the media that he is in charge of the investigation, “which is ongoing, with procedures already completed and others in progress,” he detailed.

According to the newspaper La Tercera, on October 14, an adult woman filed a complaint against Monsalve for an alleged “sexual attack” and there is an expert report from the Legal Medical Service (SML) in which she reported alleged injuries.

According to the media, the alleged victim would be a woman who works in the Government of Gabriel Boric.

The undersecretary and former socialist deputy has been part of the Government since the beginning (March 2022) and was one of the politicians best evaluated by citizens in surveys.

The Chilean Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Luis Cordero, left his position to assume the Undersecretariat of the Interior this Thursday after the departure of Manuel Monsalve.

In his replacement, at the head of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, comes Jaime Gajardo Falcón, current undersecretary of the same ministry.
