90% of young people consider music a tool capable of contributing to mental well-being. Music appears as a common language, capable of uniting genres and generations, with a strong unifying power. Almost two out of three people use it to relax, when they feel happy or simply to distract themselves. The beneficial effects of music are widely recognized: it evokes deep emotions (69%), improves mood (63%) and brings back memories (62%). These are some of the results of the new Bva Doxa 2024 research “Music and mental health” which will be illustrated on Tuesday 8 October at the Campidoglio in Rome.
The survey was carried out for the third edition of the Ro.Mens Mental Health Festival for social inclusion against prejudice, organized by the ASL Roma 2 in collaboration with the Department of Social Policies and Health of Roma Capitale, with under the patronage of Rai, which will be held from 3 to 8 October 2024 (www.salutementale.net/romens-2024)
Music – we read in the report – accompanies moods and emotions such as joy (64%), calm (48%), sadness and nostalgia (38%). It’s not just listening, but also content. 94% of young people say they habitually read song lyrics, which thus become a vehicle for the transmission of emotions and messages. Music, therefore, confirms itself as a powerful communication channel, also for issues relating to mental health. Along this line, as part of Ro.Mens, the first musical competition for unreleased songs on mental health “Music@Mens” was created with the final evening on Monday 7 October at the Tor Bella Monaca Theatre, with the participation of Pino Strabioli, Jane Alexander and Mariella Nava. The winners will be awarded in the Campidoglio the following morning, 8 October, with the speech of Mayor Gualtieri. Mariella Nava together with Nando Citarella and the users and operators of the Mental Health Departments ASL Roma 2, created “Nobody is normal”, a song that invites inclusion and positivity, which can be listened to on https://www .youtube.com/watch?v=78a7NbafGzM
