A quiet evening walk turned into tragedy for Andrea Giuliani51 years old, who died on the morning of Sunday 29 September after falling into a canal. The man, resident in the Lower Bergamo area, had gone out the evening before to walk the dog and never returned home. A mocking and daring fate awaited him on the way back, leaving an entire community shocked and incredulous.
It all started around 10pm on September 28, when Giuliani decided to take an evening walk with his faithful dogas he often did in the residential neighborhood to the north of the town. But when, after more than an hour, he still hadn’t returned, his partner started to worry. She sent her daughter to look for him, unaware of the dramatic epilogue she was about to discover.
Giuliani, in reality, hadn’t gone very far. His body lay at the bottom of the canal it runs alongside via Arrighi, with his head immersed in the water, which at that point did not exceed 30 centimeters of depth. A group of boys, passing nearby, were attracted by the heartbreaking yelps of the dog, which remained on the edge of the canal as if watching over its owner. The young people approached and raised the alarm. A few moments later, the 118 rescuers rushed to the scene with a medical vehicle and an ambulance.
Health workers worked tirelessly to save him. And for a moment hope seemed to rekindle because they managed to resuscitate him. Giuliani, rushed to hospital San Marco Polyclinic of Zingoniawas hospitalized with a reserved prognosis. But, despite the doctors’ efforts, the injuries sustained during the fall proved fatal and the 51-year-old passed away a few hours later, on Sunday morning.
According to initial reconstructions, Giuliani would have leaned towards the canal, perhaps to observe something or simply to get closer to the water. But the ground, made treacherous by the rain, gave way under his feet, causing him to slide disastrously into the canal. The impact it was enough to make the man lose consciousness, and he ended up with his head in the water. Although the depth of the canal was modest, the unfortunate position made it impossible for Giuliani to get up or call for help.
