The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) “Abu Dhabi Mobility” has launched the Green Bus Service, which includes a fleet of buses that operate on clean hydrogen and electric energy, embodying the emirate’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, improving the quality of life of its residents, adopting advanced green technologies in the public transport network, and setting new standards in sustainable urban mobility. The Green Bus Service will start on Route 65 between Marina Mall and Shams Boutique on Reem Island.
This step falls within the implementation plan of the Green Bus Programme developed by the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) with the aim of transforming Abu Dhabi Island into a green public transport area by 2030. Under the plan, a study was conducted, the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi and the region, to evaluate the performance of hydrogen and electric buses in the local climate and urban environment. The study included the technical evaluation of different buses and their performance, in cooperation with a number of international companies, agencies specialised in bus manufacturing, and governments.
The Green Bus Programme in Abu Dhabi is a comprehensive action plan to evaluate and operate public transport buses in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, to evaluate the best hydrogen and electric technologies and select the best of them, and provide them to the residents and visitors of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in cooperation with international government bodies and bus manufacturers, to make the solutions more suitable for the local environment. The programme includes developing Emirati competencies through quality training programmes in the field of hydrogen and electric buses, and practical training programmes in the Republic of Korea and the People’s Republic of China.
The Green Public Bus Programme was launched in November 2023, and its evaluation period ends in June 2025. It includes training for bus operators and drivers, in theoretical and practical sessions provided by the Integrated Transport Centre’s partners “Abu Dhabi Mobility” in green buses, with continued training of certified technicians to carry out daily maintenance and inspections.
The Green Bus Programme assesses bus performance and builds on-site support facilities, and by converting the public transport bus fleet from diesel to renewable energy, Abu Dhabi’s future annual CO2 emissions will be reduced by more than 100,000 metric tons.
The programme is a platform for collaboration between the public and private sectors, enabling the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) to work closely with local and international partners, including government entities and industry leaders, to implement the Green Bus Programme.
In addition to the program’s objectives to make Abu Dhabi Island a green public transport area by 2030, the Green Bus Program initiative also aims to reduce carbon emissions from Abu Dhabi’s public transport fleet, as this program sets the standard specifications for green buses that are suitable for the climate and operating conditions in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from public transport fleets reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to the Paris Agreement, to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
