Chiara Petrolini? “She was a perfect babysitter”. She tells this to Evening Courier Enrico Castellani, father of three children assisted by the 22-year-old from Traversetolo, in the province of Parma, who confessed to having killed and buried two newborn babies in the garden of her home.
Castellani, 55, is an entrepreneur from Verona who moved to Traversetolo for work. He has two sons and a daughter, aged between 6 and 12. For almost two months, from last April to the end of May, Chiara Petrolini babysat the three for two hours every day, early in the morning: “From 5:50 to 8, when she took them to school.”
“She was very good. My children adored her. “The first time I saw her,” Castellani recalls, “I made this clear to her: look, they are three children, they are three little pests, if they get together they are capable of destroying”. To which the 22-year-old calmly replied: “Look, you’ll see, I know how to deal with children, I like them”.
Even her employer – like all the other people who frequented the girl – had not noticed her pregnancy: “You couldn’t see that she was pregnant,” he says, “at least I didn’t see any changes.”
The eldest daughter, who is 12, learned about the story that came to light in recent weeks: “She was saddened, she doesn’t believe it either,” her father reports. “The 9-year-old knows something, but at that age they play, they listen, they don’t listen. The 6-year-old doesn’t know anything, I didn’t tell her anything, I didn’t think it was the right thing to do.”
“I still can’t understand how a girl like that, the way I knew her, could have done something like that,” Castellani observes. “I can’t believe it, who knows what was going through her head. I feel sorry for her. I wish I didn’t think about it, but it’s impossible.”
