The reshuffle of roles in the Red Bull case
The farewell of Jonathan Wheatley has made a reshuffle of roles within the Red Bull garage necessary. The now ex-sporting director of the Milton Keynes team, who will become team principal of the new Audi-Sauber branded Mattia Binotto, will not be directly replaced: according to what was reported by well-informed Dutch journalists of the Telegraphalways close to the events concerning Verstappen, the Anglo-Austrian team would have in fact decided to “split up” Wheatley’s responsibilities by promoting some internal figures including Gianpiero Lambiase, Max’s famous track engineer.
Promotion for Gianpiero Lambiase
“GP” – as Lambiase is known in the Formula 1 paddock – already head of track engineers, will in fact become the new “Head of Racing” for Red Bull. A completely new role as “head of the racing department” that should see him take on some of Wheatley’s old dutiesamong which stands out the supervision of the discussions on future regulations within the meetings of the Strategy Group. The English engineer with clear Italian origins will therefore report to the technical director Pierre Waché, but will not abandon Max Verstappen continuing to talk to him on the radio during Formula 1 Grand Prix.
The new Red Bull structure after Wheatley
Other delegations previously assigned to Wheatley will instead be assigned to Steve Knowleswho becomes “Head of Sporting Activities” having to mainly deal with the FIA and the race stewards during the F1 weekends, with Lambiase as his direct manager. Another key figure in the future of the team will then be Rich Wolversonpromoted to “head of operations” with the task of following the daily activities of the team on the track. Promotions are also expected to cascade Gerrard O’Reillywho becomes “head of support and logistics”, Phil Turnerwho will be the new “factory operations manager”, and Chris Gentwho from Verstappen’s number one mechanic becomes chief mechanic of the entire team.
