US Secretary of State Antony Blinken promised on Tuesday (17) to the leaders of the main opposition coalition to the Venezuelan regime, Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machado, that the White House “will continue to defend the return [do país sul-americano] to democracy”.
In a telephone conversation with the two opponents, the head of US diplomacy also said that he “will work to ensure that the will of Venezuelan voters is respected and will hold accountable” dictator Nicolas Maduro, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.
Blinken also praised the “courage and commitment” of González, who is a diplomat, and Machado to “democratic principles in the face of brutal repression.”
Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Maduro’s victory in the July 28 presidential election without releasing the voting records, and the result has been questioned both inside and outside the country.
The Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), the coalition led by Machado and Gonzáez, claims that the diplomat – now exiled in Spain – was the most voted and the true winner of the election.
