EU, the distinctions of the Democratic Party seem to prelude a favorable vote or at least a substantial green light for Raffaele Fitto
There is a cautious optimism in the air at home Brothers of Italy on the path that should lead to the appointment of Raffaele Fitto to Executive Vice President of the European Commission. And if distinctions and conditions continue to arrive from leading figures of the Democratic Party on the Melonian candidate, the communication line of the headquarters is not to enter into direct controversy with the Democratic Party, keeping Fitto himself out of the fray.
Ultimately, the reasoning around Via della Scrofa is that the weapons put on the table by the European Socialists seem to be rather unloaded and the same distinctions of the Democratic Party seem to prelude a favorable vote or at least a substantial green light. It is difficult to do otherwise, exposing oneself to the all too easy accusation of putting domestic controversy before national interest. To the detriment of that very Fitto who five years ago, as co-president of the Conservatives, paved the way for the ECR’s favorable vote to Paul Gentiloni.
Unloaded weapons, it was said, because the complex procedure for confirming the Commissioners requires that two thirds of the weighted votes be reached among the group leaders of the competent parliamentary commissions and No socialist candidate can reach this threshold without the support of ECR itself (not to mention that the EPP gives full support to Fitto and would be happy to be able to shoot at least one of the five socialist commissioners with the excuse of avenging a possible trip up of Fitto).
And even if the opposition of the left were to bring Fitto or popular candidates to a second hearing, in the end we would get to vote in the plenum of the Commissions and today – following the shift to the right of the Strasbourg chamber – the centre-right groups (popular, conservative, patriotic and sovereignist) they would have the numbers not only to confirm the centre-right candidates but even, with the roles reversed, to shoot the socialist ones.
For this reason, the progressives’ pressure on Ursula is now aimed at not granting the executive Vice-Presidency to Italy, with a veiled threat of voting against the entire Commission (socialist commissioners included) in the final vote. In essence, while on the one hand the PD is ready to reproach Melons a lack of European weight resulting from FdI’s vote against von der Leyen, on the other hand it is precisely the socialist group to which the PD belongs that is working to reduce Italy’s role.
A political-institutional puzzle that is difficult to escape from, the result of a top-down structure in which the political-parliamentary level overlaps with that of the national states. In the meantime, Meloni remains sly, ensuring that Ursula does not go back on his word and holds on to the support of the EPP: in these conditions he can rightly afford to defuse the Pd mines with a very Christian Democratic silence.
