Half has finally revealed how it intends to comply with the new European regulations on interoperability of messaging platforms. The company has announced the introduction of features that will allow users in the European Union to Integrate third-party app chatslike iMessage or Telegram, directly within WhatsApp and Messenger.
This new feature gives users more flexibility in managing their conversations, allowing them to bring together chats from different platforms in one place. They can choose whether to view all messages in a single inbox or keep them separate. In addition, new notifications will signal the availability of connection with newly supported third-party apps.
Meta emphasizes that it has exceeded the minimum requirements set by the regulation, offering advanced features such as reactions, direct replies and typing indicators even in interoperable chats. Over the next year, it will also be possible to create groups that include participants from different messaging platforms. Finally, the company plans to extend interoperability to voice and video calls by 2027.
This opening is a significant step for Meta, which is considered a “digital gatekeeper” in Europe and must therefore comply with the rules of the Digital Markets Act, which aim to promote competition and innovation in the digital sector. Interoperability will allow users to communicate more easily between different platforms, without being tied to using a single app.
However, implementing these features will not be without challenges. Third-party apps will need to adopt the same end-to-end encryption protocol used by WhatsApp and Messenger, the Signal Protocol, to ensure the privacy of communications. Meta has committed to making this protocol available to partners upon request.
