A new rookie in F2
Just a few hours after the announcement of Gabriele Minì’s debut in Formula 2, scheduled for this weekend in Baku at the wheel of the Prema to replace Oliver Bearman, the Formula 1 cadet category will see another rookie already from Azerbaijan GPand here too with an Italian single-seater. It is the Australian Christian Mansellpromoted by the trident as his new driver from the Azerbaijan weekend until the end of this championship.
The first words
As a result, Mansell (only namesake of 1992 world champion Nigel) will also contest the final two rounds of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabimaking the leap in category from Formula 3. Born in 2005, the 19-year-old took a pole position in Spain last season, as well as obtaining a total of five podiums, the last of which was achieved in the recent Feature Race at Monza: “I can’t wait to make my debut in the FIA Formula 2 Championship with the colours of Trident Motorsport – declared the Australian as the new driver of the Milanese team – I am extremely happy to have the opportunity to race with the Italian team on the Baku street circuit and in the next two events that separate us from the end of the season. It will be a baptism of fire to debut on a demanding track like the Azerbaijani one, but I must confess that I am more excited than nervous!”
Lineup change
In this way, Mansell becomes Richard Verschoor’s new teammate, taking over from Roman Stanek. The confirmation came directly from the Trident press release, which ‘greets and thanks’ the Czech driver: “We are extremely pleased to be able to field Australian driver Christian Mansell in the next three rounds of the FIA Formula 2 Championship. I consider him one of the most talented and emerging youngsters we have seen this year in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, where he was in contention for the title until the final round in Monza. – he commented Giacomo Ricci, Team Manager of Trident – Christian is a complete driver, fast in qualifying and extremely good at managing the tyres and overtaking. Making his debut in Baku is certainly an ambitious goal, not an easy one. Together with our new driver we have carried out dedicated preparation work, which I am convinced will bear fruit, especially if there are no interruptions in the free practice session. I am sure there are all the conditions to do well”.
