The highest former president of the court Olavi Heinonen has died.

Heinonen died of a long-term illness last Wednesday, according to his son Hannu Heinonen. He was 85 years old when he died.

Olavi Heinonen served as president of the Supreme Court for more than 12 years, from 1989 until the end of 2001.

Before this, he was a legal adviser, i.e. a member of the Supreme Court, for twenty years. He was the youngest person ever to be appointed legal advisor when he started the position at the age of 32.

in Kuopio born Heinonen studied for a doctorate in law at the University of Helsinki. He lived in Helsinki when he died.

In the Supreme Court, he was influencing, among other things, that the court began to systematically open the reasons for its decisions and publish them.
