Latvia and Romania, both member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), reported this weekend that Russian drones violated their airspace, according to information from the American agency. Associated Press (AP).
On Saturday (7), according to APa Russian drone crashed inside Latvia, in the city of Rezekne, located in the east of the country. According to Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds, the Russian drone entered his country’s airspace from Belarus. Rezekne, which has a population of more than 25,000 people, is located about 55 kilometers west of Russia and about 75 kilometers from Belarus, the American news agency reported.
In turn, Romania reported this Sunday (8) that a Russian drone violated its airspace during the early hours of the morning. It was heading towards Ukraine, which borders the country, but Romanian authorities found fragments of the drone still on its side.
As reported by AP, Romania’s Defense Ministry said that F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to monitor the country’s airspace after the incident, and that text message alerts were sent to residents of two eastern regions of the country. The Romanian defense ministry also began investigations into the possible “impact zone,” identified as an uninhabited area near the border with Ukraine, with no reports of casualties or serious damage.
Mircea Geoană, NATO Deputy Secretary General and a former Romanian diplomat, condemned Russian violations of Romanian airspace in a statement published in X, which was cited by AP. Geoană stressed that although there is no information about an intentional attack by Russia against NATO allies, the acts are considered “irresponsible and potentially dangerous.”
“NATO condemns the violation of Romanian airspace by Russian drones that occurred overnight. While there is no information indicating an intentional attack by Russia against Allies, such acts are irresponsible and potentially dangerous,” he wrote.
