CDMX.- On behalf of the commissioners of the National Institute of Transparency (INAI), the president of the organization, Adrián Alcalá, criticized the extinction of the autonomous bodies and considered that it is a setback for democracy and the rights of Mexicans.
When reading out a statement, Commissioner Alcalá referred to the approval last Friday of the ruling that considers the disappearance of organizations such as the INAI, the Federal Economic Competition Commission (Cofece) and the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT), among others.
“Disappearing the INAI would represent a de facto setback for democracy and human rights in Mexico,” said Commissioner Alcalá. In reference to a motto of the movement led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he said that “for the good of Mexico”: first human rights, freedoms and dialogue.
“Human rights are progressive and their ongoing protection and respect is not an isolated process or the responsibility of a single actor, since it requires a comprehensive commitment on the part of the Mexican State, as well as the creation of legal obligations for public bodies.
“Instead of proposing the elimination of the INAI, in the Plenary Session of this Institute we propose to work together on its modernization. The importance and relevance of independent, autonomous, specialized and impartial regulatory figures, such as the INAI, is fundamental for the health of any democracy,” he said. The president of the INAI, Adrián Alcalá, said that it is not in a hurry that the country is strengthened and that periods of adversity have been overcome with joint work. “Once again, I want to make a firm, but respectful call to the next legislators of the Congress of the Union, to the new federal authorities, headed by Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, and to society in general to stop along the way, sit at the dialogue table, recognize the achievements but also the mistakes, and draw a new horizon for transparency, access to information and privacy in Mexico,” he proposed.
