The technicians are preparing some ‘mix’ components
The Max Verstappen’s fist at the wheel at the end of the second run in Q3 in Hungary facing the pole position that slipped away by 46 thousandths is the image of the ineffectiveness of the updates brought to the track by Red Bull in the races that preceded the summer break. The package brought to Suzuka on the occasion of the fourth race of the season worked, all the subsequent ones, however, did not bring great benefits with the operating window of the RB20 that progressively thinned out, a dynamic that led to the crisis of Sergio Perez, almost incapable of being fast and consistent as in the first part of the season.
According to the German newspaper Cars, Motors and Sports a plan has been set up in Milton Keynes to find the compass after having taken an unprofitable direction in the development of the RB20. It should not be forgotten, for example, that Max Verstappen took a test at Imola with the RB18 to obtain ‘fresh’ references to compare with those of the RB20 (Verstappen still won at Imola, but by a very small margin and without the possibility of making mistakes in the final stages after having already reached the limit in terms of track-limits.
From Monza onwards, the RB20 is expected to feature ‘hybrid’ components, meaning they will be a mix of the old specifications that dominated in 2023 and the new ones. The mixing process between old and new parts, it will mainly concern the bottom of the car, which is what makes the difference in this generation of ground effect cars. The goal is to find the Sergio Perez of the beginning of the season and the ‘peaks’ of 2023. Not only Red Bull, but also Ferrari and Mercedes have recently brought innovations that have had unexpected side effects on the track, especially with regards to the phenomenon of bouncing. McLaren has not brought substantial packages since Miami and team principal Andrea Stella has already announced that updates will arrive from Woking in several stages in this second half of 2024. If they work immediately then it will be painful for Red Bull, who are looking to the certainties of the past for answers to the doubts that have arisen along the way in this 2024.
