Teachers’ proposal: “It’s too hot at school, let’s reopen in October”
Several teachers’ associations and unions are asking Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara to review the school calendar by reopening in October instead of September: a proposal that does not please the parents of students who, already now, use up their holidays well before their children return to school.
As revealed The Republicthe National Coordination of Teachers of the Human Rights Subject asks to reflect on the opportunity to postpone the return to school “given the ongoing climate changes and the strong heat that characterized the summer months”.
Marcello Pacifico, president of Anief, also agrees with the proposal: “With this heat it is absurd to start lessons by mid-September, better October. We need common sense and foresight. Even production cycles must change and the public administration must initiate these changes according to the climate”.
The proposal obviously does not please parents who, already last spring, more than 60 thousand had signed the petition launched by the organization WeWorld and the duo Mammadimerda in which they requested a remodulation of the school calendar but in the opposite way to the teachers’ proposal.
“The very long school break multiplies inequalities, favors the loss of cognitive and relational skills of girls, boys and adolescents and discourages the work-life balance for many parents forced to juggle very expensive summer camps and the lack of alternatives at reduced prices” wrote the parents, underlining how Italy already has one of the longest summer breaks in Europe.
