Unlike those who took part in the Normandy landings on 6 June, the troops who stormed the coasts of Provence on 15 August 1944 and quickly liberated Toulon, Marseille and Lyon were predominantly French. Grouped in the “Army B”, 80% of these forces were African. Their role and presence in the collective memory remain largely obscured by D-Day.
