Gaviria was 17th on Thursday and Mexican Ricardo Peña 21st. In the Scratch he finished in 20th place and added two points to the overall total. Then in the Tempo Race he placed 14th.
Gaviria had his best performance in the elimination race, finishing among the top 8. In the points race he did not score any points and finished in 17th place with 42 points.
Gaviria confirmed that he will continue “working” on the track, because it “is good for him on the road.”
Gaviria sparks controversy
At the end of his participation, Fernando Gaviria made some controversial statements. The cyclist took a dig at the Colombian Olympic Committee and the Cycling Federation.
“We hope that the support of the Committee and the Federation will come from much earlier, not just from the last year of qualification,” he told Canal Caracol.
After the Rio Games, Gaviría said he was retiring from velodromes to focus on road racing.
Another controversy
Gaviria was in controversy before the Games because he obtained his place in the Olympics in replacement of Juan Esteban Arangowho had the quota, and who took advantage of this moment to express his displeasure at not having been able to be in Paris.
