Jorge Rodríguez, former national team player, passed away today at the age of 56.
On Monday he underwent surgery and was reported in serious condition.
Rodríguez suffered from Fisher Evans syndrome, which forced him to retire from football in 1997.
The midfielder played for Toluca and Santos Laguna, in addition to participating in the 1994 World Cup and winning the 1993 Gold Cup.
At the World Cup he missed one of the penalties in the Round of 16 match against Bulgaria.
He was trained in the Toluca youth system and defended the colors of the scarlet team until 1995.
He was later transferred to Santos Laguna with whom he won the League title in Winter 96.
In 1997 he announced his premature retirement after being diagnosed with Fisher Evans disease, which caused muscle weakness and led to a low platelet count, as well as affecting his red blood cells and brain tissue.
He worked in some departments of the Government of the State of Mexico.
For 28 years he fought against this disease that undermined his health in recent months.
Rest in peace Jorge Rodríguez (1968-2024).
