In Italy There were 24 new cases of West Nile virus infection in humans in the first week of August. Since the beginning of May 2024, 52 confirmed cases have been reported in our country, while they stood at 28 in the previous bulletin. Among the confirmed cases, 3 deaths have been reported – one in Veneto, one in Friuli Venezia Giulia, one in Emilia Romagna – one more than last week.
Among the confirmed infections, 29 were in the neuro-invasive form (1 Lombardy, 8 Veneto, 3 Friuli Venezia Giulia, 13 Emilia Romagna, 2 Puglia, 1 case imported from the United States and 1 from Albania), 8 were asymptomatic cases identified in blood donors (8 Emilia Romagna), 15 were cases of fever (9 Veneto, 4 Emilia Romagna, 1 case imported from Oman and 1 from Morocco).
The integrated surveillance bulletin for West Nile and Usutu virus, released by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and updated to 7 August, does not, however, detect any cases of Usutu virus.
Veterinary surveillance carried out on horses, mosquitoes, sedentary and wild birds has confirmed the circulation of West Nile virus in Abruzzo, Puglia, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia Romagna, Marche and Lombardy. Positive cases are being confirmed in the provinces of Treviso, Padua, Cuneo, Turin, Oristano.
The number of Provinces with demonstrated circulation of the West Nile virus rises to 28, belonging to 9 Regions: Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia Romagna, Abruzzo, Campania, Puglia and Sardinia. Furthermore, the presence of the virus has been confirmed by Cesme (National Reference Center) in 82 pools of mosquitoes captured in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia Romagna and Abruzzo.
