Alvaro Morata and Rodri suspended for one match after chanting ‘Gibraltar is Spanish’
Alvaro Morata and Rodri have been suspended for one match by UEFA for singing “Gibraltar is Spanish” during the celebrations in Madrid for the triumph at the European Championship in Germanya. The AC Milan striker and the Manchester City midfielder were placed under investigation after the complaint of the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA), the British enclave in Spanish territory. The accusation is of violation of the “rules of good conduct” with behaviors that have used sporting events for other purposes “discrediting the sport of football, and in particular UEFA”.
Morata and Rodri to miss Serbia-Spain
The two will therefore miss Spain’s next match against Serbia on September 5. Rodri had chanted “Gibraltar is Spanish” from the stage and Morata had soon encouraged the crowd to do the same. The Gibraltar Football Association had complained about the “offensive and provocative nature” of the Spanish celebrations.
