Independiente Medellín already has a new coach, following the departure of Alfredo Arias. The designated player is Alejandro Restrepo, who had just left Alianza Lima, from the first division of Peruvian football.
According to the criteria of
Restrepo, 42, will manage his third team in Colombian football. He was already at Atlético Nacional, first in two periods, as manager, and then, as a full-time coach, winning the Copa Colombia in 2021.
He then moved to Deportivo Pereira, where he gave them their first ever first division title in the 2022 Liga-II, and led them to the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores last year.
Restrepo will be accompanied by Giuliano Tiberti as technical assistant, Walter Rivera as physical trainer and Jhan Alejandro Cárdenas as video analyst.
This could be Alejandro Restrepo’s first game with DIM
He could make his debut next Tuesday, when DIM plays against Palestino of Chile in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana. This weekend he will not play in the League: the game against Santa Fe was postponed.
DIM sent a farewell message to Arias, who had arrived in mid-2023 to replace Sebastián Botero. Under the Uruguayan’s command, the team was very close to achieving the star in the second half of that year: a goal by Vladimir Hernández forced a penalty shootout in which Junior was the champion.
In the first half of this year, Medellín had a calamitous start, in which they were thrashed 5-0 by Millonarios in Bogotá, and the poor results of the first few games ruined their chance of qualifying for the semifinals.
However, in the Copa Sudamericana, DIM managed to advance to the round of 16 and that had given Arias some breathing room. Despite this, the start of the second half of the year, with only one win in five games, and, above all, the defeat against Deportivo Cali on Sunday, exhausted the patience of the directors, who decided to dismiss the Uruguayan.
