“Think global, act local for local.” This is the mantra with which the BMW Group is carrying forward its electric car battery production strategyThe German giant is in fact thinking about five new factories assembly plants for sixth-generation high-voltage batteries around the world: Irlbach-Straßkirchen in Germany, Debrecen in Hungary, Shenyang in China, San Luis Potosí in Mexico and Woodruff in the United States.
Battery production worldwide
“We are creating five plants on three continents to produce our sixth generation high voltage batteries“, confirmed Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management for Production at BMW AG. His words were followed by those of Markus Fallböhmer, Senior Vice President of Battery Production at BMW AG: “The close connection between battery production and vehicle production is part of our strategy. This helps the BMW Group to increase resilience of its production”.
The BMW strategy
The Neue Klasse will be the first to incorporate the brand new cylindrical cellswhich represent a technological leap by the group, offering significantly improved energy density, charging times and range, according to BMW. To shorten logistics times as much as possible, these cells will be assembled in new plants located as close as possible to the plants where the vehicles are planned to be produced. In addition to the new sites mentioned above, the BMW Group is also improving existing systems, ensuring and creating jobs.
Five new factories
BMW has revealed the first steps in its production strategy. The first Neue Klasse vehicles will be produced at the new Hungarian plant in Debrecen starting next year: The assembly of high-voltage batteries and vehicles will start in parallel, given that the final buildings are currently being completed. The BMW Group will also produce the high-voltage batteries for the Neue Klasse models in Germany, specifically at Irlbach-Strasskirchenin Lower Bavaria: The production building should be closed with facade and roof by the end of the year. China will produce the Neue Klasse from 2026, the following year it will be the turn of the Mexico. As for the USAwhen construction is completed in 2026, the Woodruff plant will assemble high-voltage batteries for all-electric cars produced at the nearby Spartanburg plant.
