A tragedy has rocked the county of Palm Beach on the evening of Monday, August 6, when a vehicle left the road and overturned into a canal, killing nine people, including six children. The accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. near Belle Glade. The sole survivor, a 26-year-old man, is currently hospitalized with serious injuries.
According to initial reconstructions by the authorities, the vehicle involved was an off-road vehicle that was travelling west on the Hatton Highway. The driver lost control of the vehicle while making a left turn. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a guardrail and overturned into the adjacent canal. Emergency calls began coming in shortly after the accident, reporting a vehicle upside down in the canal, with only the wheels visible.

The county fire captain, Tom Reyesdescribed a dramatic scene:
“First responders found the vehicle overturned with only the wheels visible.”
Firefighters, including divers, and Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to the scene. Rescue workers confirmed four people dead on the scene and transported the other five to the hospital in critical condition, but there was nothing they could do for them.
The victims of this tragic accident include six children: a 1-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy, two 5-year-old boys, an 8-year-old boy, and a 14-year-old boy. The other victims are two women, ages 21 and 30, and the 56-year-old driver. The only survivor is a 26-year-old man, who remains in critical condition in the hospital.
The NTSB, in coordination with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is sending a team to conduct a safety investigation into Monday’s single vehicle crash involving a sport utility vehicle that departed the roadway and flipped into a canal, near Belle Glade, Florida.
