Two-pronged attack
As we recalled at the end of the Belgian Grand Prix, in the standings of the last eight races, Max Verstappen’s closest pursuer is Oscar Plates. The McLaren driver is also improving in race management and pace, aspects where he inevitably paid something compared to the more experienced Lando Norris. The Australian won in Hungary and also finished ahead of his teammate in Belgium and let’s not forget the fact that at Silverstone McLaren’s excessive zeal in not making a double stop during the first pit stop essentially eliminated Piastri from the fight for victory and the podium.
McLaren is 42 points behind Red Bull in the Constructors’ standings, while Max Verstappen has a 78-point lead over Lando Norris in the Drivers’ standings. Oscar Piastri is not that far from his teammate and will hardly be subjected to team orders, especially in the first races after the resumption of hostilities: “The first objective is to win the Constructors’ Championship and I think we have a very good chance of doing so given that in the last 6-7 races we have recovered many points on Red Bull. – Piastri’s words to the microphones of Sky Sports News – As far as I’m concerned, in the Drivers’ standings, I would obviously like to finish as high as possible. I’m not out of the running for the championshipI know it’s an ambitious prediction, but I want to put in a series of good races first and foremost to help the team win the Constructors’ title. If during the year I find myself in a situation where I have to help Lando, obviously we will discuss it, but the first objective is to win the Constructors’ championship and try to do a good job for myself too.”
Piastri’s gaze is also turned towards 2025, when the McLaren drivers will be able to aim for the big target, barring any upheavals: “A year ago we were only fast on some circuits, this year instead we are strong everywhere. Obviously I want to achieve great results already this year, but growing in view of 2025 I think is the more realistic goal”.
