Nowadays, when we talk about a video game adaptation, we think of success stories like The Last of Us series or the Super Mario Bros. movie. However, this is not always the case, since in the past, such a work almost always resulted in failure. This is one of the reasons why we never saw a movie of Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemptioneven when the major producers were interested.
In a recent interview with The Ankler, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser was asked about the possibility of seeing a Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption movie, to which he revealed that for years, Multiple studies tried to make this a reality, but the studio always refused.. This is what he said:
“After some awkward meetings, we asked them [a los ejecutivos] why would we do this. [Su respuesta fue] ‘Because you can make a movie.’
And we said no, what you described is that you are making a movie and we have no control and we are taking a huge risk that we will end up paying for with something that belongs to us.”
Let’s remember that for a long time, a movie based on a video game resulted in failure, because the people behind the project had no idea how to translate a certain property to a different medium. Houser thus refused to accept this possibility. However, things are different today.
The adaptations we see today usually feature a creative team that tries to replicate what makes video games special, or create something new that feels like a complement to the studios’ work. Along with this, Series allow for more complex stories to be better adapted. This is how a GTA and Red Dead Redemption series could work today.
We can only wait to find out what Rockstar’s plans are, although the team is more focused on the next installment of GTA at the moment. In related topics, these are the news that arrive at GTA Online. Likewise, we tell you whether or not the actors’ strike will affect the development of Grand Theft Auto VI.
Author’s Note:
A GTA series doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but it has to find the right angle, as a simple heist story wouldn’t be enough. It also has to critique and parody American culture, something that many may not want to do.
