He Arsenal is about to close the signing of Mikel Merino, from the Real society.
The Gunners have been scouring the market for a new midfielder this summer and have stepped up their efforts to strengthen in that area in recent days. 90min revealed last week that, following confirmation of Riccardo Calafiori’s arrival from Bologna, Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their interest in Merino.
Now, Fabrizio Romano reports that there is an agreement between Arsenal and Merino regarding personal terms, with only the transfer fee still to be settled.
Real Sociedad are hoping to get more than £25m for Merino, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract in the Basque Country. The two clubs are in verbal talks.
Merino was recently one of the protagonists of Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024, scoring the winner in the last minute of extra time against hosts Germany in the quarter-finals. He has been capped 28 times by La Roja at full-time. The 28-year-old has been at Real Sociedad since 2018, after signing for Newcastle United, and has since made a whopping 242 appearances for the Basque side.
Merino’s club and country team-mate Martin Zubimendi had also been widely linked with Arsenal, as well as the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool, but has remained steadfast in his desire to remain at Real Sociedad.
Arsenal have made three signings so far this summer: the permanent purchase of David Raya from Brentford, Calafiori and young goalkeeper Tommy Setford.
