The new formula for European competitions comes into effect in the 2024-25 season, which also changes several aspects of the UEFA Index calculation system. Find out how it is calculated.
It was an announcement that caused quite a stir: the change in the formats of European competitions. Starting this season, this change brings with it other innovations, including changes to the UEFA index calculation system. The index is still based on the aggregate results of all the representatives of each league on the continental scene. The total is divided by the number of clubs over a five-season period.
In the three European competitions, starting from the league phase, two points are awarded for a win. Then, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. However, with the end of the group phase, this type of situation can no longer exist. At the end of each 36-team championship, bonuses will be applied based on the position occupied in the final standings, but with different scales.
In the Champions League, the gap varies between twelve points for the first-placed team and six for the twenty-fifth-placed team. In the Europa League, the leader takes home six points, the ninth-placed team four points and the bottom twelve go home empty-handed. In C4, the best-placed team takes home four points.
As in previous seasons, there will be additional bonuses for qualifying for the knockout rounds. Each competition will not be rewarded as much as the other, marking a distinction between the Champions League and the Europa League that did not exist before. In C1, there will be 1.5 points for each round reached until the final, while in C3, 1 point, and in C4, 0.5 points.
