All’s well that ends well. McLaren has seen the regularity of the rear wing confirmed, which in recent days had caused a stir for creating a sort of small DRS effect even with the mobile flap closed.
An idea that they studied, evaluated and presented to the FIA in Woking. In Paris, after having examined it, they gave the go-ahead to use it and for some time the MCL38 has been the new performance benchmark in Formula 1.
Lando Norris, Max Verstappen’s main rival for the Drivers’ world title, did not hide his satisfaction in seeing his team leave nothing to chance. The search for detail, the gray area of the regulation, always makes the difference and in this case the British team seems to have found the right card to hunt for at least a 2024 title.
“I’m very happy. The guys at the factory are doing a great job. Yes, everything has been tested, everything is legal. We are doing what we can, Formula 1 is made for this, to explore everything within the rules.”
“We passed all the tests and everything and the FIA is satisfied. So now I’m proud, I’m happy with what the team is doing, they are pushing the limits and that’s what you have to do if you want to fight at the top and fight against people who are known to do these things and to explore every possible area.”
Norris emphasizes how the frantic search for detail has led McLaren to find something that has turned its season around. Then, however, he was keen to point out that other teams also have solutions that are at the limit of the regulation, but which are not visible because perhaps never framed by the cameras or the photographers’ lenses.
“I’m most proud of the team for pushing every single area we can. We haven’t been in a situation in the past where we could do that, but now we’re in that position, so I’m very happy. It’s a beautiful thing to see, in my opinion. There are so many rules, so many things in place, but teams, including us, are finding ways to explore and look at different things that other teams haven’t thought of.”
“As much as you can see us doing it, there are many other teams that do it and you don’t see it on TV. Maybe you haven’t driven a race and you don’t see certain cameras and things like that, but it’s not just us. It’s a great game, a great race, but for me I’m very happy with what McLaren did,” concluded the vice-leader of the World Championship.
