In 2019, Monaco’s Charles Leclerc had a similar clash with the Dutchman as Norris. Afterwards, the Ferrari driver went to Verstappen and told him: “From now on, I’ll drive just like you.” Which he did. The result: respect was restored. Norris also claims that he has learned a lot: “It won’t be easy, but I don’t want it to be easy either.”
Verstappen doesn’t want any trouble outside of the racetrack, and the Red Bull driver is accordingly composed: “Lando fought for his second Grand Prix victory, for me it would have been my 62nd success. It’s clear that the emotions are different.” Formula 1 drivers are tough characters, which suits their actions at the limit. In the end, success is not achieved by those with the most convincing oaths of loyalty, but by those who are the most uncompromising. See Senna. See Schumacher. See Verstappen.
Shortly before the halfway point of the season, the question arises whether the crash was just an episode or describes a situation. Verstappen says innocently: “Neither of us want something like that to happen again in the future. The only thing that counts is my friendship with Lando!” When it comes to criticism of his driving style, such as the condemned swerve when braking, the world champion is even clearer: “I don’t give a damn about that. I’m going home and living my life.” Until the question of driving style arises again before the next corner.
