Okay, it’s much bigger. Okay, now it’s a half-crossover. Okay, it was born on the same platform as Citroen and Opel. Everything is fine. But the new Fiat Panda (to whose name the word Grande has been added) is a real homage to the first series. Giugiaro’s, the one with flat glass to save money, the one with exposed door hinges. The one that, to differentiate the two-cylinder 30 version from the 4-cylinder 45 version, had a different nose thanks to the simple reversal of the iron grille (another brilliant idea by Giorgetto).
A car that explained the kilometers to Italians, which married design and practicality, which was pure minimalist poetry. Still beloved today. So in honor of the Myth (with a capital “M”), at the style center in Turin they gave the Big Panda many historical references.
The nose has a square mask with pixel dotting that simulates that of the 30 or 45, as do the headlights, made up of opaline cubes, which in addition to being inspired by the windows of the facades of the Lingotto factory, help to create a “luminous signature” with cubes in a checkerboard pattern that simulate the face of the first Panda. The same goes for the side, for the roof racks and for a thousand other details, including the famous four bars of the logo.
A dive into history and the past, which arrives a few weeks after the 125th anniversary of the Fiat brand and a few days before the world preview debut of the car set for 11 July.
And – to the delight of the many haters of battery-powered cars – the new Grande Panda will also be petrol-powered in addition to the full electric version. A tribute, if you like, to the first series which didn’t even have electric windows.
