It’s called Aspark SP600 and it’s there‘World’s fastest electric hypercar. Thanks to a project managed by Manifattura Automobili Torino with the technical support of Bridgestone, the car was launched by driver Marc Basseng at the Papenburg Automotive Testing at the record speed of 438.7 km/h. Founded in 2005 by Masanori Yoshida, Aspark is no stranger to these types of records. After having commissioned the Aspark Owl, the electric Hypercar with the best acceleration in the world, the Japanese company once again turned to MAT – Manifattura Automobili Torino, an OEM boutique with a particular focus on performance and special projects founded by Paolo Garella – for the development and production of a second project capable of shattering the world maximum speed record for electric vehicles.
The choice of tires
Obviously it wasn’t an easy task. Just to start with the tyres: which ones to choose? MAT opted for Bridgestone, which has developed a tailor-made tire capable of not only exceeding 420 km/h, but also managing the specific needs of the vehicle’s weight and the car’s driving dynamics. Bridgestone responded with Potenza Race tires developed specifically for the SP600, a unique configuration based on the flagship ultra-high performance solution.
Virtual and physical tests
The Aspark SP600 was then subjected to a comprehensive series of test virtual and physical, including a specific campaign of validation activities in the wind tunnel and several track test sessions. As Aspark’s development and engineering partner for this undertaking, MAT was responsible for the complete development of the vehicle, including powertrain and software integration, suspension and chassis design, software calibration and the entire development and production of the battery pack.
From words to deeds
“It’s been about 10 years since the OWL Hypercar project began,” said Masanori Yoshida, CEO of Aspark. “We aimed to become the fastest accelerating car in the world, and then attempt and achieve today’s world record for top speed. This technical capability inspires everyone involved to personal excellence and to challenge and grow by leaps and bounds into the future.” “This record represents a milestone in the continuous growth of MAT, a company that today represents the best of the Italian tradition in the Automotive Industry”, adds Paolo Garella. “In 10 years we have developed more than 11 complete vehicle projects and have proven that with the right resources we are second to none. I am very proud of my team and extremely happy to have reached this milestone on the 10th anniversary of MAT’s foundation.”
