Broken hopes
The qualifications of Canadian Grand Prix they seemed like the first step towards the conclusion of a positive weekend for the Williams, with Alex Albon reaching Q3 and Logan Sargeant not far from this finish line. Instead, contrary to expectations, the Montreal race turned into a disaster for the Grove team: as for Ferrari, the two drivers of the English team also finished their respective races early.
Double retreat
Sargeantwho had already made two mistakes in wet track conditions, paid a high price third mistake at the exit of turn 4, with the loss of control of the car and the subsequent impact against the protective wall (also the cause of the first safety car). The outcome of the match was more disappointing, and above all unfortunate Alex Albon: protagonist of a beautiful and courageous double overtaking at the last chicane on Ricciardo and Ocon, the Anglo-Thai was unable to do anything to dodge Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari on lap 54, which also ended up spinning.
Top-10 not far away
In this way, the race of the former Red Bull driver ended, who after 10th place in Monaco could have potentially finished in the points in Canada too: “The race ended in a disappointing way – he has declared – the points were certainly within reach and the car worked well on all compounds in conditions that were changeable. We didn’t take any unnecessary risks and the race plan was well executed by the team. It was a battle of survival, as was to be expected given the weather conditions, and we ended up getting trapped in other people’s mistakes. Racing is like that.”
Yet another misstep for Sargeant, in a constant crisis of results and with his future increasingly in question, even more so after the recent contacts between Williams and Sainz himself: “The track conditions were difficult, especially at the start of the race due to the amount of standing water. There was a lot of aquaplaning, so I tried to manage it. I made too many mistakes. I lost my rear end very quickly and couldn’t save it. I’m disappointed in myself after having the impression of having driven fantastic this weekend. We had a good pace when we managed to put together clean laps.”
