Back and forth
Parallel to the action on the track, which is providing twists and spectacle these days, the Canadian Grand Prix weekend is also characterized by a particular ‘duel’ off the track which is involving the 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuvetoday a television commentator with always sharp opinions, and Daniel Ricciardodriver of the Racing Bulls team who is experiencing a period of few highs and many lows in the latest races.
In recent days Villeneuve had crushed Ricciardo, essentially accusing him of no longer deserving a seat in F1. The Australian’s reply to Montreal came first on the track – with a fantastic fifth place in qualifying – and then through the media, with rather harsh words addressed to the Canadian champion. 1 to 1 and the ball was in the centre, but the former Williams star still wanted to have the last word and once again replied to the 34-year-old from Perth.
Villeneuve raises
“Like Christian said [Horner, n.d.r.], it needs a push, a pressure and it worked – commented Villeneuve – the car suits him this weekend and when you have a car that suits you, you drive your best. This was a good qualification“. The Canadian however reiterated that his judgment on the #3 Australian will change when he is able to show continuity of performance.
“If he can continue this weekend like this and he’ll do another five or six races so he’ll be good to go – concluded Villeneuve – as he himself said, this year he lacked consistency”. The appointment, at this point, is for the post-match period, where it is not excluded that Ricciardo – especially in the event of a positive result – could send another ‘message’ to the host.
