Still in Q3
Second consecutive top ten finish for Alexander Albon, who after 9th place in qualifying in Monte Carlo further reached Q3 at the last Saturday of the Canadian Grand Prix at the wheel of his Williams. In Montreal, the Anglo-Thai driver did not go beyond the tenth positionbut the Mercedes-powered FW46 still provided good sensations on the ‘Gilles Villeneuve’ circuit.
It could have gone better
Yet, at least judging by Albon’s words, there is anything but a certain satisfaction, especially for a strategy in Q3 that did not lead to the desired results: “A frustrating Saturday – He admitted – we made a small change to the set-up before qualifying and the car felt good right from the start. We had good pace in Q1 and Q2, but in Q3 we tried a different racing plan which didn’t work. The rain between sessions lowered the track temperature and we struggled to warm the tyres, compromising our final attempt in Q3. Tomorrow will be a challenge with the two Ferraris behind us, but I also think we will have a race ahead of us with the Aston Martins and the RBs. Overall, it’s good to have participated in two Q3s in a row and I believe that tomorrow’s rain will create some good opportunities for us“.
Immediately behind the Ferraris
Also demonstrating a good collective performance by Williams is the 13th place by Logan Sargeantalso in his second consecutive Q2 and above all his best qualifying performance this season. A final placing which, however, does not fully reflect the performance of the American driver: “It’s a little frustrating because I’ve been hindered in my best lap – He admitted – I actually gained a tenth and a half on myself. If I had that time, I would have gone straight to Q3, which is disappointing because you know it was left on the table. However, it was another solid weekend considering the conditions and how we adapted. The pace of our car is slightly better and this elevates us as a team. I seem to have driven well with the package I have available at the moment. We are in a position where we can definitely fight from tomorrow. I’m sure it will be a difficult day, with conditions most likely changing over the course of the race. So far we have managed the situation well and we will try to continue to do so.”
