Do you know if you belong to the upper, middle or lower class? In Mexico, social classification and economic income are topics of constant debate and analysis, especially in a context where segregation and income disparity are palpable.
Recently, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) along with data from National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) has provided detailed information that allows citizens identify what social class they belong tobased on their purchasing power and economic situation.
According to Profeco and INEGI, In Mexico there are at least six socioeconomic categories which vary from low-low to high-high, depending on several factors such as type of employment, income and job stability.
For example, the low-low categorywhich comprises 35% of the population, includes people with temporary or unstable jobs and those who depend on social assistance.
In contrast, the upper-upper classwhich only includes 1% of the population, is made up of families that have accumulated significant wealth capable of supporting future generations.
The INEGI, for its part, has revealed that 42.2% of households in Mexico are classified within the middle classwith an average monthly income of 22,297 pesos, a figure that rises to 23,451 pesos in urban areas and drops to 18,569 pesos in rural areas.
This classification is very important since it represents approximately 47 million citizens in 15 million homes.
However, the majority of households in Mexico, 56.6%, are categorized as lower class with an average monthly income of 11,343 pesos.
In contrast, the upper class enjoys significantly higher incomes, averaging 77,975 pesos per month.
These figures illustrate the wide range of economic situations in the country and reflect the need for effective policies to reduce the income gap.
At a global level, the situation is even more complex. The Pew Research Center indicates that the income of the middle class vary drastically, with a range of 10,000 to 22,927 pesos per month.
Worldwide, The middle class earns an average of 20 dollars a dayequivalent to 341 Mexican pesos, highlighting the enormous differences in purchasing power between countries.
