The Takata airbags continue to cause considerable concern to a large part of the world’s manufacturers. From this point of view, Stellantis finds itself directly involved in the issue, particularly after recall carried out for the C3 and DS 3 models, through which it asked drivers for approximately 500,000 examples of the two models, all produced between 2009 and 2019 and located in 24 countries across Southern Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Stellantis extends recall
And it didn’t end here. Stellantis has proactively extended its recall of vehicles with potentially defective airbags to more than 1,000 people, Reuters reported other Citroen and DS modelsas well as the brand Opel. In particular we are talking about the Citroen C4, DS 4 and DS 5 models, as well as a series of models from the Blitz brand: all of these, a Stellantis spokesperson says, are subject to a sort of preventive recalla measure that is certainly less restrictive than the previous recall.
Citroen, DS and Opel in the crosshairs
The potential problem is always the same: the airbags placed under observation pose a safety risk when activated because the chemicals they contain can deteriorate when exposed to hot, humid weather conditions. “The C4, DS4 and DS5 models are based on different platforms using different airbag references for which no case of failure has been identified to date. Opel models are also equipped with different airbags for which no case of failure was identified“the words of the spokesperson.
Defective airbags
We’ll see what happens, in the meantime Stellantis has made it known that it is working closely with all authorities authorities investigating airbag-related accidents to provide the requested information, although they are unable to comment on individual cases. According to its 2023 annual report, the Italian-French group has allocated just under a billion euros to fund the extension of this Takata airbag recall campaign across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa and America.
