The analysis of the Austrian manager
Front row with the same time as George Russell (who found a decisive slipstream from Alexander Albon on the last straight): Red Bull lost Sergio Perez already in Q1, but Max Verstappen he managed to bring the RB20 to the front row alongside the English driver’s Mercedes.
Helmut Marko commented on the Dutch driver’s performance as follows: “We can be satisfied with the result of this Qualification especially in light of what happened in FP2 with the ERS problem”, declared the Austrian manager as reported by racingnews365.com.
From a race perspective, Marko believes that the RB20 will have a good set-up even if it were to rain. Most likely Red Bull decided not to sacrifice the aerodynamic load on the altar of Qualifying also in light of the unstable weather. Verstappen conducted a long stint in FP3 with medium tires and a high fuel load to put the car in crisis; in fact, graining on the front tire emerged. “We have a good set-up for the race even if it rains and we have worked on the weak points – added Marko – the Mercedes is 2-3 km/h faster on the straights so it won’t be easy to overtake it. I hope that Verstappen has less tire degradation and that he is able to read the race as well as he usually does. I hope we will be competitive at the top.”
