Sometimes getting the best time is not enough to be in Pole Position: this is what Max Verstappen experienced today, author of the 1’12″000 which would have earned him the record in Qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.
Unfortunately for him, the exact same time had previously been obtained by George Russell, so the first place on the grid will go to the Mercedes driver ahead of the World Champion’s Red Bull.
The Dutchman showed up with a slightly pinched face once he got out of his car, but he tried to take it philosophically at the end of a session that was anything but simple which saw him suffer for a long time in the three heats.
“It went like this, but overall I think we had a good Qualifying because since the beginning of the weekend we have found everything rather complicated, so I accept second place, which I would have signed before starting today’s practice”, admits Verstappen , once again in difficulty after what he experienced at the Monte Carlo GP.
“I felt good in Monaco, it just wasn’t the right track for our car and to be honest, even this weekend the preparation hasn’t gone very well so far.”

Starting from the front row will still give him the opportunity to compete for success, but every single detail will need to be well prepared to make the car from Milton Keynes uncatchable.
“We’re all very close and that will make the race exciting. Tomorrow we’ll have to see how to manage the tires, plus there’s the question mark of the rain, which keeps coming and going.”
“Attack right away? We’ll think about it, at the moment it’s not something that worries me much.”
