To all the election results were surprising. Even to one’s own Federal government and his campaign team who had to, improvised, try to contain the weight drop and of the Bag when giving estimates of a Congress of the Union with almost an official majority and what that represents for the counterweights of a Democratic system that carries five years under attack of the Republic President.
He PRI It remains the third political force in the country; he obtained more than 6 million 130 thousand votes just for the Senate of the Republic; we will have two senators more than how we started the legislature in 2018 (17) and our candidates won mayoralties very relevant such as Monterrey, San Luis Potosí, Saltillo, San Miguel de Allende, Cuajimalpa and Fresnillo, to name a few.
Of course, we expected better results. To be clear, it didn’t go well for us. It is difficult to understand how the electorate voted for a party whose officials are responsible of the death of hundreds of thousands of people due to poor attention to Covidwho have let the crime reigns in various parts of the country with death recordand that the plays flagship of this government have increased their cost and are far from working as promised or simply do not work yet.
On the other hand, the violation of the President of all electoral rulesparticularly the political communication model, and the delivery of social programs directly and as if they were gifts of the government – instead of State programs – gave them undue advantages, which we hope the electoral authority reviews so that they are not repeated.
But electorate voted – with a rate of just over 61% – and its results, although they may have some marginal changes, are visible to everyone. Whats Next?
A very complex period is coming for the Republic in which practically legislative checks disappear and they want to eliminate the balance of powers by reforming and seeking to control all autonomous organizations -INE, INAI, IFT, COFECE- as well as the Judicial Branch (SCJN) (TEPJF).
The “self-containment” of whoever exercises the presidency would seem to be the only thing left, which has the international markets and, of course, the most important national actors very concerned, since it is not healthy to be at the will of a single man. (or a woman). Worse still, between Thursday and Friday we witnessed that between the acting President and the virtual President-elect there are more disagreements than agreements. So it is incoherent and risky to talk about “self-containment” for how things are seen. That is why it is important to resolve the issue of overrepresentation. It is the only thing that can generate balance in the country.
In the PRI we have already convened our National Assembly to define a course. I am for the growth and advancement of a new youth of PRI members who have been successful in these inequitable elections. We have to regroup towards 2027. We cannot allow the country to continue adrift, but we have to rethink how we approach the electorate, what we propose, how we deliver, how we relate – or not – with the government and how we avoid decisions are made that affect the democratic advances achieved over a hundred years of struggles.
As the opposition, we have to reflect on what happened, but another collective reflection is also required: how can it be that the electoral authority has allowed for months an inequitable election with simulations to position the official candidates? Is there no longer rigor in the electoral authority and did it try to benefit the ruling party? How can it be that the media – practically all of them – pointed out in a well-documented manner acts of corruption by official candidates and yet the electorate still gave them their vote? Have the media stopped being relevant? Will the only restraint we will have in the next three years be the international markets, the central bank of the United States (the FED) or the International Monetary Fund?
In the PRI we know how to be a responsible opposition. We have also agreed with opponents to be the government. Now we have to reflect on where we are going, but let there be no doubt that we will be the opposition and we will seek to reinvent ourselves to better serve society, the electorate and our beloved Mexico.
