Neuralink has obtained authorization to proceed with a second surgery to implant its device in the brain of another patient. The news comes months after Noland Arbaugh became the first to receive this revolutionary brain implant.
New developments for Neuralink technology
Last week, Elon Musk announced that Neuralink is looking for the second participant for this clinical study. The company had started recruiting potential participants last year, with the aim of offering this technology to people affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)spinal cord injury, or other conditions that cause quadriplegia.
Neuralink also fixed a problem that caused Arbaugh’s implant to malfunction about a month after his surgery. Thanks to gods software updates, many features have been restored. Arbaugh, paralyzed from the neck down, showed in videos shared by Neuralink that he is now able to play chesscontrol a music app, and perform other tasks.
The second intervention
In the second procedure, the implant strands will be inserted deeper into the patient’s brain. This change is intended to reduce movements unwanted events that occurred in Arbaugh’s case. The FDA approved these changes, and Neuralink expects to complete the second surgery in June. The company has already received more 1,000 applications For participate at the experimentation.
