In United States, Disney+ It already offers an extensive library of series and movies from different studios, such as 20th Century Fox. However, in Latin America, much of this content was restricted to Star+, another streaming service. In this way, users in our region had to pay for two subscriptions to enjoy everything Disney offers. Fortunately, this will end at the end of June.
On June 26, 2024, Disney+ and Star+ will merge in Latin America, to give rise to an improved version of Disney+, which will be very similar to what we can find in the United States. This means that series and movies like How I Met Your Father, The Bearand Only Murders in the Buildingas well as a lot of sports content from ESPN, were added to the offering offered by Disney’s main service.
Star+ hosts a lot of content that is considered for a larger audience. An example of this is Poor Thing, the award-winning film by Yorgos Lanthimos, which will be available on Disney+ once the merger is completed at the end of the month. Now, regarding the new subscription options, Disney+ will be updated to offer three different tiers.
- Disney+ Premium: Here we find content from Disney, Star and ESPN, with Dolby Atmos audio, and UHD/HDR video, on up to 4 devices simultaneously and including the live broadcast of all ESPN linear channels and all exclusive sporting events for streaming.
- Disney+ Standard: Here we find content from Disney, Star and ESPN, with 1080p video quality and Stereo 5.1 audio; including live broadcasts of linear channels ESPN and ESPN 3.
- Disney+ Standard with Ads: Here we find content from Disney, Star and ESPN with advertisements, with 1080p video quality and Stereo 5.1 audio; including live broadcasts of the linear channels ESPN and ESPN 3. This option will only be available initially in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Colombia, to be integrated into packages from commercial partners such as Mercado Libre that will provide this plan through its Meli+ benefits program in those five countries.
All those who already pay for a Disney+, Star+ or Combo subscription will automatically get Disney+ Premium. Although at the moment it is unknown if we will see a price increase in the subscription, currently what you already pay will be respected. I can’t wait to see Only Murders in the Building. I wasn’t planning on paying another subscription service to watch a single series, but with the merger of Star+ and Disney+, the time has come to watch some of the productions that have eluded me for years.
