A train accident occurred in the Czech Republic. In Pardubice, about one hundred kilometers east of Prague, a night express train, headed for the Ukrainian town of Chop (on the border with Slovakia), collided head-on with a freight train. Over 300 passengers were traveling on the first vehicle. The provisional toll is four dead and at least 23 injured. This was reported by Interior Minister Vit Rakusan, who went to the site of the accident together with Transport Minister Martin Kupka.
The main connection between Prague and the eastern part of the country was interrupted to allow the investigation. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala spoke of a “great tragedy” and expressed his condolences to the relatives of the victims. According to local fire department spokeswoman Vendula Horakova, the freight train was carrying calcium carbide.
