The Chinese Academy of Sciences recently published the highest resolution geological atlas of the Moon ever created. This detailed map will be crucial for future exploration and colonization programs of our satellite.
Made thanks to the contribution of over 100 researchers in a period of 10 yearsthe atlas reveals 12,341 craters, 81 basins And 17 different types of rock. The map was created at an unprecedented scale of 1:2,500,000offering a detailed view of the entire surface.
As reported by the magazine Nature, China will use this map to guide its expeditions. The dispatch of a spacecraft is imminent gather rocks on the far side of the Moon. Furthermore, China is collaborating with Russia and other countries to build the International Lunar Stationscheduled for mid- 2030 in the area of Lunar South Pole.
The atlas will be crucial not only to identify the best area to build the station, but also to study the geological history of our natural satellite. Other countries will be able to use this map to plan their own lunar missions.
Moon: a global visualization
The Academy Chinese also published a book entitled “Map Quadrangles of the Geologic Atlas of the Moon” which includes 30 sector diagrams. These diagrams, put together, form a global view of the entire satellite.
The current maps, based on data from the Apollo missions of the 1990s60 And ‘70, are now obsolete. Since then, our knowledge has advanced significantly. The new Chinese atlas, based on more recent data, fills the gap this gap and responds to future lunar research and exploration needs.
The atlas was loaded onto a platform cloud call DigitalMoon, making it accessible to the international research community. This instrument represents a valuable resource for scientists and engineers around the world.
What do you think are the most exciting opportunities offered by this new map?
