On video: they capture the moment when three friends hug each other before being swept away by floods in Italy

The two women and a man, all in their 20s, were walking along the Natisone River, near the commune of Udine, when the waters suddenly rose. Firefighters used drones, boats and divers in the search.

The young people were identified as Patrizia Cormos, 20 years old, Bianca Doros, 23 years old, and Cristian Molnar, 25 years old. According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the two oldest were a couple.

“We threw a rope, but the flood waters literally swallowed it in front of us. We saw them disappear,” Giorgio Basile, head of the Udine provincial fire department, told the Telegraph.

The main element is not so much the rain, but the force of the river and the very strong currents. There are gorges, water ebbs and, even for experts, it is a particularly dangerous task.

Cormos, 20 years old, was studying at the Udine Academy of Fine Arts. He reportedly asked his mother to join his friends for his outing. Doros, who was Romanian, was studying economics in Bucharest and had arrived in Udine a few days earlier to visit her parents. Her boyfriend, who was also Romanian, had traveled from Austria to see them.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, Cormos’s mother stated that she had told her daughter not to go out because she was tired. The young woman, however, stated that she would only go out “for a little while” to “take some photos.”

After hearing about the case, Michele De Sabata, mayor of Premariacco, the city where this dramatic event occurred, detailed in statements to Corriere della Sera: “The water had surrounded them, but it was still low. Maybe they decided not to move so as not to get their clothes and shoes wet. Unfortunately, the river was then flowing at a tremendous speed. There was a firefighter rescuer just seven meters away from them, but he couldn’t do anything.”

In addition, it was made available to the families of the victims.
