Jannik Sinner will be the new number 1 in world tennis, the first Italian to reach first position in the ATP ranking. The 22-year-old Italian achieved his goal thanks to Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal before the quarter-finals of the Parisian Slam. The 37-year-old Serbian, current world number 1, leaves the tournament after the 5-set victory against Francisco Cerundolo, number 23 in the draw, in the round of 16. In the match against the Argentine, Djokovic repeatedly asked for physiotherapist intervention due to problems with his right knee. The Belgrade champion complained, during and after the match, about the conditions of the pitch, which he said were too slippery.
Djokovic bids farewell to the throne after 428 weeks at the top of the rankings. Sinner’s run was crowned halfway through an amazing season for the Italian and a negative one for the Serbian. The Italian rises to the top in a year enriched so far by 3 triumphs – Australian Open, Rotterdam and Masters Miami – while the champion from Belgrade has yet to lift a trophy in 2024. The last title for Djokovic dates back to the ATP Finals in November 2023 in Turin: in that case, victory in the final against Sinner.
