Mexico
Marte Vega Román, president of the Confederation of Agricultural Associations of the State of Sinaloa(Caades), informed Portafolio that yellow corn in Mexico is mainly destined for livestock use, highlighting a recent change in the import sources of this cereal, with a significant increase in imports from Brazil and Argentina.
“We have recently observed a increase in yellow corn imports from Brazil, because it is cheaper to transport it through different ports compared to importing it from the United States. Sometimes it is also imported from Argentina, but in recent times Brazil has been the main supplier, a country that has experienced notable growth in its production of yellow corn,” said Vega.
Total imports of yellow corn in Mexico have shown a constant increase year after year, reaching an estimated 23 million tons. This trend is projected to continue rising.
“Currently, we face a deficit in national production, which will lead us to import more than the 23 million tons mentioned. It is important to highlight that Mexico is displacing China as the main importer of yellow corn, exceeding 23 million tons,” revealed the Caades source.
Sinaloa
Vega highlighted that In Sinaloa, yellow corn production is marginal, despite previous attempts. However, there are exceptions, although they are rare, where certain industries purchase it from specific producers.
“Yellow corn production is concentrated mainly in Chihuahua and other regions, while here in the city, the focus falls practically on white corn,” he noted.
Regarding white corn in Sinaloa, the president of Caades reported that an annual production of six million tons is reached.
“We produce six million tons. We have always fought to be a product that goes into tortillas for human consumption, so here in Sinaloa practically half of what we produce from white corn goes to livestock use at the national level,” the president emphasized.
