Gaza (Union)
Yesterday, a group of United Nations experts called on all countries to recognize a Palestinian state to ensure peace in the Middle East.
The call comes less than a week after Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognized a Palestinian state.
The experts, including the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, said that recognition of a Palestinian state is an important recognition of the rights of the Palestinian people and their struggle for freedom and independence.
They added: “This is a precondition for lasting peace in Palestine and the entire Middle East.”
The experts said: “The two-state solution remains the only internationally agreed upon path to achieving peace and security for both Palestine and Israel, and it is also the way out of the cycles of violence and anger that have been passed down through generations.”
Spain, Ireland and Norway said that the reason for their recognition of a Palestinian state was to seek to accelerate efforts to ensure a ceasefire in the war that Israel is waging in Gaza.
The three countries expressed their hope that their decision would motivate other European Union countries to follow suit.
